The Words to Which I Should Like to Call Your Attention

from Logic on Fire: the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones Score by Gregory Wilbur

/

about

As the film opens and many different voices speak to the significance of Martyn Lloyd-Jones on a personal level as well as for the Church, the music evokes a strong movement but with a touch of memory and reverence. This is undergirded by the use of the Welsh hymn tune St. Denio which is most sung to the words “Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise.” This hymn tune is based on a traditional Welsh melody “Can mlynedd i nawr.” As with all of the uses of hymn tunes in the score, the desire was to match the tune as well as the text with the appropriate section of film. As the film shifts to the scenery of Wales and the early days of Lloyd-Jones’ life, the music moves to the tune Cwm Rhondda (1907), sung to the text “Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah” (1745) by William Williams, the “Watts of Wales.”
